The night of December 26 is a night I will never forget. Tom and I were lying in bed watching Eddie the Eagle. At about 10:00 I started to feel what felt like cramps. They would come and go, so I decided to watch the clock just for the heck of it to see if there was any consistency to their timing. Sure enough, they came about every 10 minutes. The movie ended around 10:30, and I got up to get a drink of water and go to the bathroom. That’s when I decided to tell Tom that I thought something was up.
I initially said, “I don’t want you to freak out, because it could just be gas or something, but I’ve been having this cramping feeling that comes about every 10 minutes or so.” Tom immediately opened up the contraction app he had on his phone to start to time them. Sure enough, they began to come every 3-4 minutes and would last for about a minute. Around 11:30 pm. I made the decision to call my doctor since they were getting stronger. After describing everything to her, she advised that I come in to the hospital.
I will spare you all of the details and just give a general overview of how the rest of the night early morning carried out. We checked into the hospital at 12:04 am on December 27 {my birthday!} I was in triage until about 2:45 am. when I was officially admitted to the delivery floor. At about 3:30 am. I finally received the epidural {BEST.THING.EVER.} My water broke on it’s own at 5:30 am. Then the waiting game began…
I was 8.5 cm. dilated for several hours and not making much progress. My baby’s heart rate would also drop whenever the nurses tried to change my position. Therefore, my doctor made the decision around 2:30 pm. that the safest way to deliver my baby would be through a c-section {cue the tears.} I hadn’t planned to have a c-section and had NO idea what to expect. All I knew was that I wanted to do whatever was going to keep both baby and I safe. Before I knew it, a team of nurses and doctors swooped into the room and began to prep me for surgery.
Thomas (Tommy) Joseph Walsh IV was born at 3:59 pm. on December 27, measuring 9 lbs 2 oz. and 21″ long. How lucky am I to share a birthday with my son?!
Mommy’s first time meeting Tommy 🙂
It’s hard to believe that just the day before we were with our families celebrating Christmas!
We spent four nights at the hospital and were thrilled to come home on New Year’s Eve!
I’m enjoying every moment of being home with Tommy. I can’t believe he’s over a week old already! He had his first visit to the pediatrician, and is already back at his birth weight {he was 8 lbs. 10 oz. when we left the hospital.} We feel so blessed to have such a healthy, adorable little boy! 🙂
I am so happy for you all! Epidurals ARE the best! Ha! I’m so glad, even with an unexpected C-Section, everyone is safe and healthy! Enjoy every moment!
